Rationale for Module |
The event industry is a dynamic and flourishing
component of the service sector: in recent years events have established themselves in the marketing mix as a means of communication and promotion, as well as being a vehicle for education and entertainment. Demand for staff with the skills to conceive and manage events is not confined to specialist event agencies, but is growing in firms and organisations that use events in the context of their overall activity. The successful management of events, whatever their size and purpose, requires careful planning to ensure that the organisation’s or client’s aims are achieved with an efficient use of resources. The organisers of an event thus need to understand operational event management tasks as well as how these relate to meeting strategic objectives. The module focuses on the knowledge, understanding and skills required to oversee the management of an event, as a particular type of service product, from planning through to implementation, review and evaluation. The module focuses in particular on the corporate sector including conferences, congresses, exhibitions and other marketing-focussed events such as product launches, as this is the largest and fastest-growing component of the events industry, and where graduates are most likely to enter careers. Examples of other event types such as charity fundraising events, sporting events and festivals will also be used to underline the scope of variety within the events sector. The module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in particular in the Level 1 module ‘Introduction to Event Management’ as well as ‘Business Context & Functions’ and ‘Accounting’. At Level 2 it is complemented by the generic module ‘Project Management & Professional Communication’ and the pathway-specific modules ‘Event Design & Logistics’, ‘Event Marketing’ and ‘Law for Event & Cultural Managers’, each of which contributes a specific knowledge and skills set. The module serves as a basis for the Level 3 modules ‘Meetings, Trade Fair and Exhibitions Management’, ‘Event Impact Analysis’ and ‘Critical Issues’. |
